National Standards as set out by Ofsted
and what I do to achieve them!

STANDARD 1 – SUITABLE PERSON.

I will provide day care and have unsupervised access to children. I have had the following;

-Relevant training.

-Experience.

-Personal health check.

-Criminal records bureau (CRB) check for my household and assistant.

STANDARD 2 – ORGANISATION.

I will meet adult to child ratios as stated by Ofsted and ensure training and qualification requirements are met. My home is well organised to meet children’s needs effectively I am governed and inspected on the records and paperwork that I have to complete.

STANDARD 3 – CARE, LEARNING AND PLAY.

My aim is to meet children’s individual needs and promote their welfare. I will help children to build their confidence and independence, by encouraging them to try new activities in a safe and supportive environment. I will assist children with learning right from wrong, by setting fair and consistent boundaries. I hope that children will learn through play, both in a structured and free nature. I have a selection of books for pre-schoolers, I also have a varied selection of toys. Activities are planned weekly, and themed to help with learning, and to ensure that broad selections of activities are available. I will plan to provide activities and play to develop their emotional, physical, social and intellectual capabilities.

STANDARD 4 – PHYSICAL  ENVIROMENT.

My home has been passed as a safe environment for children to be cared in. My home is safe, secure and suitable for children, I have adequate space. My home is welcoming to children and they have access to a wide range of activities which will promote their development. My whole home has been Ofsted registered for use by children. Plus I have a sole use, stocked playroom and decent sized garden. Children are invited to play in all areas of my home.

STANDARD 5 – EQUIPMENT.

The furniture, equipment and toys I provide will create an accessible and stimulating environment. Toys and play materials promote equality of opportunity. Equipment is in good condition, well maintained and complies with safety standards.

STANDARD 6 – SAFETY.

I take positive steps to promote safety within my home setting and on outings. I ensure proper precautions are taken to prevent accidents. I undertake regular safety awareness activities with children that are old enough to understand, and help those younger to learn and understand them. Children are always supervised, taking into account age, ability, and need for privacy etc. I need to have written permission for children being collected by another adult, in conjunction with a password agreed by the parent and childminder at time of signing the contract. I need details of emergency contacts for the parents, in case a child is not collected. I ask for written permission to take children on trips, which may sometimes include a car journey. I have a checklist for parents to sign to undertake other activities if the need arises from time to time. I also need signed permission for medical treatment in an emergency. I have a fire blanket, and smoke alarms. A fire escape plan, and carry out fire drills every 6 weeks. Details of which are logged.

STANDARD 7- HEALTH.

I will promote the good health of children and take positive steps to prevent the spread of infection. I will take appropriate measures when children are ill. My house and garden are completely smoke free zones.

I am ONLY allowed to give any medication to children with parent’s written permission. All details are logged of doses and times.

Children who are ill or become ill are not to be minded by a childminder, and must be collected by a responsible parent or guardian. If a child were on short-term medication, I would prefer it to be administered to them by the parent before they leave for work. When this is not convenient, I am only prepared to do it with the parent's written permission. The medicine must be in its original container with clear instructions

STANDARD 8 – FOOD AND DRINK.

Children will be provided with regular drinks and food this will be in adequate quantities for their needs. Drinking water and cordial are available to children all day. Food and drink will be properly prepared, nutritious and will comply with dietary and religious needs.

STANDARD 9 – EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES.

I will promote equality of opportunity and discriminatory practice for all children of all cultures, genders and disabilities. Children have the right to feel valued and be free from discrimination. Children will learn equality through play, and through modelled behaviour.

STANDARD 10 - SPECIAL NEEDS.

I am aware that some children have special needs and I will ensure appropriate action can be taken when a child is identified. Parents are asked to share as much information as possible with the childminder, and to complete a child questionnaire, in order that I can fulfil any special requirements that a child may have.

STANDARD 11 – BEHAVIOUR.

I am able to manage a wide range of children’s behaviour in a way which promotes their welfare and development. I have house rules and boundaries which are for the safety of everyone in my care. These will be issued to you at initial meeting. I operate a “Time out” step which children will sit on if they continue to misbehave after two warning. This is to give then time to think about their actions and consequences of these actions. This is a reflection time only, where ever possible I try to distract the child so that they are re directed, and that diverts behaviour. I prefer to manage behaviour using reward charts and stickers. So that a smiley face at the end of the day is what everyone goes home with?

STANDARD 12 – WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS AND CARERS.

I will work alongside parents to meet the needs of their children. Information will be shared, you are the central role. You as a parent know your child best and I will listen to your advice. Prior to any contract being filed, I like to find out as much as I can about your child’s likes and dislikes, behaviour etc. I try my utmost to match your child existing routine, in order that they settle quickly and fill “at home”. I value the fact that both parties are able to discuss any concerns they both have, to reach a happy and positive outcome.

STANDARD 13 – CHILD PROTECTION.

Protection of a child is the childminders first priority. I will comply with local child protection procedures and I will put procedures into practice.

Your child is my main priority. Procedures are available to view.

STANDARD 14 – DOCUMENTATION.

Records, policies and procedures which promote welfare, care and learning are maintained. Records regarding a child will be shared with their parents.
